CHYULU CAMPS CODES

The camp’s mission is to offer young people from all over the world an opportunity to immerse themselves in the heart of Africa, the unique Maasai culture, to learn about cultural preservation, wildlife conservation, and ecotourism as well as take part in safaris within the breath-taking beauty of the Chyulu landscape.

This initiatory journey demands that our young guests demonstrate involvement and impeccable behavior, which is explained in these “Chyulu Codes”.

RESPECT:

  • Respect for nature: don’t leave any rubbish behind (for instance food waste, food packages and plastic). It is harmful to the local wildlife and detracts from the beautiful natural environment. Introducing foreign food or drink into a national park or game reserve is illegal.
  • Respect for resources: water, energy and food are rare goods.
  • Respect for cleanliness and order: everyone must ensure that the tents and lounges are in order, the bathrooms are clean, and the main area is kept tidy!
  • Respect local culture, respect for the women and men who live and work there; they have a language, a culture, a way of life, very different from that of our young visitors, for example regarding the important role of the elders.
  • Respect for other campers and staff on camp: when in the rooms, especially at night, campers are expected to remain calm and avoid excessive noise.
  • Respect for the programme and staff involved: punctuality and courtesy are a must in the camp. You will be left behind if you’re late!

SAFETY: we are in wild nature where animals are masters, which imposes imperative security constraints.

  • During the night, security guards patrol the camp. They can be called with a horn in case of problem; leaving a tent at night or walking around camp without guard is prohibited.
  • On safari, everyone always remains in the cars, unless instructed by the guide.
  • On expedition, the group always remains together, no one can wander off. Silence may be requested at times by the guide.

TECHNOLOGY: the trip is a “detox” from screens.

  • Upon arrival at the camp, all electronic equipment will be handed over to the camp manager who will return it for a limited time daily and in cases of emergency.
  • Cameras are available.
  • Computers with internet are available when needed and authorized.

Ban on:

  • Possession and consumption of drugs (severely punished by law in Kenya), tobacco, vapes, or alcohol.
  • Going into the opposite gender’s tent at any time.
  • Going out of a tent and into each other’s tents during the night.
  • Entering a tent to take anything without permission.
  • Violence, by word or deed, serious disrespect towards a fellow student or adult.
  • Leaving the camp without a Maasai guide.

Breaking any of these rules will lead to punishments and/or community service. In serious cases, the camp will refer the matter to the local authorities or organize the accompanied return of the camper to their home.

HEALTH: A health assistant resides at the camp. Campers may consult her at any time.

  • Campers are never allowed to take medication without the nurse’s supervision.
  • Before eating, everyone is asked to wash their hands. Hand disinfectant dispensers are available.
  • The African sun is strong: the use of sun creams before each outing and wearing a cap or hat are essential, as well as good hydration.
  • Shoes should be closed and suitable for walking.
  • During the night, adjust the mosquito nets and carefully close the zips of the tents to avoid insects.

AFTER THE CAMP…

    • Keep this memorable experience with you for the rest of your life! Write a diary/photo album ; show strikingly beautiful landscapes, wild animals encountered, Maasai children and elders with whom you will have established a bond!
    • Why not return to your country and prepare your own conservation project? With the help of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT), we will guide you in choosing a cause that is close to your heart, and you will be able to support it after your return home.
    • You have the power to shape the future of life on our planet, and may this trip give you the inspiration and energy to devote a significant part of your life to it.

Take nothing but pictures,
leave nothing but footprints.

ROOMS AND ACCOMMODATION

During summer, Chyulu Wilderness Camp will welcome up to 30 students. Each tent can house up to 4 students with an en-suite bathroom, 2 showers, and is safely placed on wooden galleries. The tents are equipped with mosquito nets, UK and EU plug systems, soap, shampoo and conditioner. Boys and girls are in separate accommodations.

The camp has been designed to respect traditional Maasai architecture and culture. It boasts a traditional African lounge, dining room, library, conference room, outdoor fireplace and cafe.

Teachers and staff are spread across the camp to ensure their proximity to all students.

PROGRAMME

See here for an example schedule, which may be revised before the start of camp. Please note that individual daily timetables are not provided to parents.

PHONES & DIGITAL DEVICES

We are aware that contact with the family is important and of the place that mobile phones now have in children’s lives. For this reason, we do not prohibit telephone use, but we do limit it to 30 minutes at the end of the day, which will allow each child to take full advantage of the technology-free aspect of the trip, immerse in nature and social life that the camp offers. The camp has working Wi-Fi.

The camp can always be contacted at +254709520002

Phones are left in the safe of the office. Children will be required to give their phones to the teacher on duty for the night-time.

Children will all be provided with a camera. We recommend bringing a memory card. There are also laptops available at camp if needed.

HEALTH & INSURANCE

FOOD

Organic produce harvested locally supplies our well-trained chefs who adhere to safe food standards and prepare meals respecting all diets. In addition, all drinking water at the camp has gone through a filtration system.

Any food allergies (gluten free, lactose free, peanuts, etc.) should be clearly indicated in the health questionnaire. Meals on the menu containing pork will be indicated. Vegetarian menus are also offered.

During mealtimes, each student is assigned a table which is also shared with the camp teachers. Attendance at all meals is compulsory.

HEALTH AND INSURANCE

Parents are requested to provide the school with a health questionnaire for their child; the form is sent to parents prior to the start of camp and must be signed by a doctor. A questionnaire without a doctor’s signature is considered incomplete and therefore Le Rosey Camps declines all responsibility ensuing from missing information.

Please make sure that all important medical information we need to be aware of, such as allergies, medication or any recent medical intervention is clearly indicated. We must be informed of all specific dietary requirements before the beginning of the camp. We also need to be informed if your child suffers from other allergies (horses, cats, dust, insect bites…).

All medication must be labelled with the child’s name as well as the exact dosage and handed over to the health assistant. Children must not self-medicate. For the safety of all, children are not allowed to keep medicines on them.

Fees paid include travel insurance and assistance solution providing cover in the event of a medical emergency resulting from illness or accident. If the child’s health/accident insurance in his/her country of residence does not cover the costs abroad or if the child does not have health/accident insurance, our insurance is activated to cover the costs during the camp. In all cases, our company will contact the child’s health insurance, if it exists.

A health assistant resides at the camp. Trained personnel and emergency equipment are also present, and the plane can get to an excellent hospital within an hour.

  • Before eating, everyone is asked to wash their hands. Hand disinfectant dispensers are available.
  • Nighttime security guards patrol the camp. They can be called with a horn in case of problems.
  • The African sun is strong: the use of sun creams before each outing and the wearing of a cap or hat are essential.
  • Shoes should be closed and suitable for walking.
  • During the night, it is strongly advised to adjust the mosquito nets and to carefully close the zips of the tents to avoid insects.
